Minister of Justice receives representatives of Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights

30/11/2017

Today, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Davit Harutyunyan received representatives of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, headed by Director of the Field Operations and Technical Co-operation Division of the OHCHR Georgette Gagnon.

The delegation was comprised of Chief of the Americas, Europe and Central Asia Branch of the OHCHR Jose Maria Aranaz, Chief of the Europe and Central Asia Section Hulan Tsedev and officer of the Europe and Central Asia Section Dragan Lalosevic.

Minister Harutyunyan expressed gratitude to the delegation for the visit to Armenia and noted that, due to the amendments made to the Constitution in 2015, major processes are currently being carried out in the field of legislation of the Republic of Armenia in order to organise the smooth transition from the semi-presidential form of governance to parliamentary governance.

During the meeting, the Minister and the OHCHR representatives touched upon the 2017-2019 Action Plan arising from the National Strategy on Human Rights Protection developed with the active involvement of civil society representatives. Davit Harutyunyan emphasised that, taking into consideration the experience in implementing the previous Action Plans, a co-ordinating body has been set up under the new Action Plan, which monitors the performance of the actions, envisaged by the Action Plan, by the responsible republican executive bodies and the state bodies established by law. In this context, the Minister highlighted the public discussion to be held with the participation of representatives of non-governmental organisations in December 2017, during which the progress of implementation of the Action Plan will be discussed.

At the end of the meeting, the parties also touched upon other issues related to human rights protection.
