Minister of Justice receives delegation led by Representative of the European Commission Vassilis Maragos

Today, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Artak Zeynalyan received the delegation led by Head of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Eastern Partnership Unit of the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission Vassilis Maragos.

Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski; Deputy Ministers of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Vigen Kocharyan and Suren Krmoyan; Head of Cooperation Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Hoa-Binh Adjemian and others participated in the meeting.

On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the Minister greeted the EU partners and expressed his gratitude to them for the assistance provided to Armenia and to the justice sector in particular. The Minister assured that the new Government was determined to bring the expectations of the people to life in a short period of time. Afterwards, he presented the short-term and long-term programmes targeted at reforms in the justice sector.

Ambassador Świtalski confirmed the willingness of the European Union to co-operate with Armenia and noted that he wanted to bring the actions launched by the EU and Armenia into compliance with the expectations of the new Government. The Ambassador assured that the European Union was ready to implement new and pretentious programmes in Armenia.

Representative of the European Commission Vassilis Maragos considered justice and rule of law as key factors, particularly within the context of economic development and engagement of foreign investors and attached importance to the actions aimed at increasing transparency and accountability of justice.

During the meeting, the parties touched upon the judicial reforms in the Republic of Armenia, the activities aimed at improving the penitentiary system and the fight against corruption, as well as discussed the opportunities for implementation of new joint programmes within the scope of the Armenia-EU co-operation.
