Issues on legal and judicial reforms in the Republic of Armenia discussed

A meeting chaired by Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Arpine Hovhannisyan was held today with the representatives of the EU delegation and the PEER REVIEW European experts involved in the peer review of the assessment of the reforms in the judicial and penitentiary spheres and the progress of the actions for prevention of torture within the framework of the EU TAEX tool.
Members of the working group of the 2012-2017 Strategic Programme for Legal and Judicial Reforms in the Republic of Armenia participated in the discussion.
The aim of the meeting was to analyse — within the framework of the Strategic Programme for Legal and Judicial Reforms in the Republic of Armenia — the current state of progress in the reforms of the judicial and legal system and penitentiary sphere in Armenia, as well as in the fight for prevention of torture.
Arpine Hovhannisyan welcomed the guests and highlighted the tangible results of implementation of the 2012-2016 Strategic Programme for Legal and Judicial Reforms.
According to the Minister, the ongoing measures for legal and judicial reforms are envisaged to be fully completed in 2017.
The participants of the meeting discussed issues related to the effectiveness of the judicial system, fair trial, accessibility to free legal aid, enhancement of probation legislation, improvement of custody conditions in places of imprisonment, application of alternative punishments, as well as a number of other issues related to legal and judicial reforms.
