By the decision of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, for the first time, a citizen of the Republic of Armenia has been transferred from the Islamic Republic of Iran in order to serve the remaining part of the particular punishment in the Republic of Armenia. Let us mention that in the sphere of mutual legal assistance, the Republic of Armenia and the Islamic Republic of Iran are co-operating within the scope of the Agreement "On the Transfer of Convicts". The Agreement provides the opportunity to transfer persons having committed a crime in the territory of one of the States and sentenced to punishment in the form of imprisonment to the respective country of citizenship in order to serve the remaining part of the particular punishment. From the side of the Republic of Armenia, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia serves as the Central Body for Transfer of Convicts. Let us also mention that to this day, several dozens of convicts have been transferred from the Republic of Armenia to the Islamic Republic of Iran — to their respective country of citizenship, but there has not been any transfer of a citizen of the Republic of Armenia from the Islamic Republic of Iran; thus, in spite of objective reasons, the Agreement between the two countries was only in effect unilaterally.
