Transfer of convicts with Iran moving to a new level

Deputy Minister of Justice Armenuhi Harutyunyan received the delegation led by Deputy Head of the Prisoner Transfer Committee of the Ministry of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyed Kamal Abdollahi Asl. The parties mutually expressed gratitude for the close co-operation in the sector of transfer of convicts and for the adopted policy. During the meeting, the transition of the co-operation between the two countries — within the scope of the existing Agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the Islamic Republic of Iran "On the Transfer of Convicts" — to a higher level was recorded, evidence of which is the transfer of a citizen of the Republic of Armenia from the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia. Let us mention that this is a unique case when a citizen of Armenia has been transferred, as we currently do not have other citizens sentenced in Iran. During the meeting, importance was also attached to enshrinement of the priority of protection of the rights of convicts, with the aim of fostering the social re-integration of convicts, providing the latter with the opportunity to serve — in the State of which they are a citizen — the remaining part of the punishment imposed on them.

To better the process of transferring convicts, the parties exchanged views for consideration during the upcoming session of the Armenian-Iranian Commission.
