Public confidence in judicial system to be increased — Armenian-Swiss co-operation plan

Head of the Department of International Legal Cooperation of the Ministry of Justice Anahit Abrahamyan participated in the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Project "For expanding capacities of judges of Armenia to meet the new expectations on the judiciary and raising public trust in the judiciary” funded by the Swedish Government and the seminar ''On ethics, fight against corruption and integrity in the judicial system of Armenia''.

Anahit Abrahamyan presented the 2022-2026 Strategy for Judicial and Legal Reforms of the Republic of Armenia — the actions targeted at the strengthening of judicial transparency and increase of effectiveness.

Abrahamyan stated that the Ministry of Justice highly appreciates the Armenian-Swedish co-operation in the process of improving the judicial and legal systems. According to her, this Project is of key significance for the government agency, as it aims to build public confidence, strengthen and deepen knowledge about ethics, anti-corruption issues in respect of judges, enhance effective communication skills with the media and issues related to the ranking of judges.

Abrahamyan also touched upon the results of data of the special research conducted within the scope of the Project "For expanding capacities of judges of Armenia to meet the new expectations on the judiciary and raising public trust in the judiciary”, based on which the level of independence of the judicial system, the external pressures affecting independence, the relations with media and society, differentiated and gender-based approaches and a number of other issues are explored in-depth.

Anahit Abrahamyan emphasised that the existing provisions of the above-mentioned Project fully comply with the policy adopted by the Ministry of Justice, as well as with the objectives and directions of the 2022-2026 Strategy for Judicial and Legal Reforms of the Republic of Armenia.

Members of the Supreme Judicial Council Vigen Kocharyan and Davit Khachaturyan, Judge of the Svea Court of Appeal; Head of Unit for International Relations of the Swedish National Courts Administration Jonas Högström; Senior Judge, Project Coordinator, representative of the Swedish National Courts Administration Björn Linden and other representatives of the courts of Armenia and Sweden were also attending the event.
