50,090,659 drams worth of works were carried out to improve the Abovyan Penitentiary Facility, another 308,694,720 drams worth of construction works are planned in 2023

Minister of Justice Grigor Minasyan referred to the reforms carried out in the "Abovyan" penitentiary during the session of the Standing Committee on Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs of the National Assembly.

In particular, the Minister noted that in 2022, a psychotherapeutic room equipped with the support of the Council of Europe was opened in the "Abovyan" penitentiary. The furnishing of the room was carried out with special solutions in accordance with the therapeutic work, equipped with the possibility of conducting both individual and group therapy.

Along with the furnishing of the psychotherapeutic room, with the support of the Council of Europe, professional trainings of psychologists of penitentiary institutions were carried out in order to develop the skills of therapeutic work.

The Minister noted that during the years 2022-2023, construction works were carried out to repair internal water supply and drainage networks, toilets and bathrooms for women, minors, school, club and isolation cell in the "Abovyan" penitentiary institution of the Ministry of Justice.

In total, 42 toilets, 7 bathrooms, laundry room, kitchen, dining hall, room for a detainee with a child under the age of three were renovated.

Renovation and finishing works have been carried out in the unit for medical care and maintenance.

Grigor Minasyan emphasized that the preparation of construction planning budget documents has already been carried out, in particular.

- for the construction works of the new fence with a length of 220 linear meters and the repair of 4 watchtowers,

- for the repair and decoration of the administrative, women's, minors, school, club buildings and 4 dorms, as well as for the construction works of repairing the gutters with a length of about 700 linear meters on the roofs the said buildings.

In 2022, in general, 50,090,659 drams worth of works were carried out in the Abovyan Penitentiary for the improvement of building conditions. In 2023, it is planned to carry out construction works worth 308,694,720 drams.
