Upon the decision of the Government, from now on, the "Penitentiary Medical Center" SNCO will be managed by the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Armenia, contributing to the full integration of prison healthcare into the national healthcare system.
This decision is also conditioned by the reforms agenda of public administration, in particular, by the result of the functional and institutional review and reorganisation activities of state administration bodies.
The Ministry of Justice has developed a draft, which proposed to reserve the medical aid and service provided to detained persons and convicts to the specialised body — the Ministry of Healthcare. Currently, the medical aid and service provided by the SNCO is available 24/7 in all penitentiary institutions. All sub-divisions of the SNCO are equipped with at least one general practitioner; there is a dentist in all sub-divisions.
As a result of close co-operation between the Ministry of Justice, "Penitentiary Medical Center" SNCO and the Ministry of Healthcare, the quality of professional medical care for persons deprived of liberty has been changed significantly. The employees of the SNCO undergo necessary trainings in the best educational bases of the Republic according to the pre-arranged schedule.
As a result of the mentioned co-operation, the quality of medical services has improved, the period of medical care has been reduced significantly, including with free medical care referrals guaranteed by the State. Previously it was done in 1-2 months, but currently, this period has been reduced and it is organised in 1 day.
The staff of the "Penitentiary Medical Center" SNCO consistently continues the works aimed at increasing the professional level and ensuring the necessary technical equipment.
